One of the most common questions we hear from new patients is what the NHS actually covers. The answer in Scotland is reassuringly comprehensive. Here is a full breakdown of what is available.
Examinations and Diagnosis
All NHS checkups and review examinations are free for every patient in Scotland. X-rays required for diagnosis are also covered, with patients paying a small contribution unless exempt.
Preventive Care
The NHS in Scotland places a strong emphasis on prevention. This includes enhanced preventive advice, periodontal assessment and treatment for gum disease, and fissure sealants for children’s teeth.
Restorative Treatment
Fillings are covered on the NHS — both white composite and silver amalgam. Root canal treatment is available for incisors, canines, premolars, and molars. Crowns, inlays, onlays, and bridges are all available where clinically necessary.
Both routine and surgical extractions are covered. This includes wisdom tooth removal where clinically required.
Full and partial dentures are available on the NHS in Scotland. Denture repairs, relines, and additions are also covered.
Orthodontics
NHS orthodontic treatment — including braces — is available for children and young people where there is a clinical need. Adult orthodontics is generally only available on the NHS in exceptional circumstances.
What Is Not Covered?
Cosmetic treatments, including teeth whitening, cosmetic veneers, and dental implants, are generally not available on the NHS. Your dentist will always make clear which treatments are NHS and which are private.
