Not every dental problem requires the same-day treatment, but some situations genuinely cannot wait. Knowing the difference helps you get the right care at the right time.
Situations That Are Always Emergencies
Knocked-out permanent tooth: Time is critical — the sooner you are seen, the better the chance of saving the tooth. Get to a dentist within an hour if possible.
Dental abscess with swelling: An abscess is a bacterial infection that can spread to the jaw, neck, or even the brain if left untreated. Facial swelling, a throbbing pain, and a bad taste are warning signs.
Uncontrolled bleeding: Bleeding from the mouth that does not stop after applying pressure for 20 minutes requires urgent attention.
Severe, persistent toothache: Pain that is unbearable, keeping you awake, or not responding to over-the-counter pain relief needs to be seen urgently.
Broken tooth with sharp edges: A broken tooth that is cutting your tongue or gum needs prompt treatment.
Situations That Are Urgent but Can Wait a Day or Two
A lost filling or crown (with no pain), a chipped tooth (with no pain), or a loose brace wire. These need attention soon but are not same-day emergencies.
Situations That Are Not Emergencies
A mild toothache that comes and goes, slight sensitivity to hot or cold, and minor gum irritation. These should be checked at your next available appointment.
