In Scotland, some patients receive all their NHS dental treatment completely free of charge. Others receive heavily subsidised treatment. Here is how to find out which applies to you.
Free Dental Treatment for Everyone
Regardless of your circumstances, NHS dental checkups are free for all patients in Scotland. There is no charge for an examination.
Who Qualifies for Free Treatment on Everything?
You are entitled to free NHS dental treatment in Scotland if you fall into any of the following categories:
Age: You are under 26 years old.
Pregnancy: You are pregnant or have had a baby in the last 12 months.
Benefits: You receive Universal Credit, income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance, income-related Employment and Support Allowance, or Income Support.
HC2 Certificate: You hold a valid NHS HC2 certificate, which is issued to people on low incomes who do not qualify for the above benefits.
What If I Am Not Exempt?
If you do not fall into any of the above categories, you still benefit from NHS subsidies. You pay 80% of the cost of treatment up to a maximum cap per course of treatment. For the current charge schedule, visit the NHS Inform dental charges page.
How Do I Claim My Exemption?
When you book an appointment at GK Dental, let us know that you believe you qualify for free treatment. You may be asked to provide evidence of your eligibility — such as a benefits letter or your HC2 certificate. Always bring proof of your exemption to your appointment.
