A scale and polish is one of the most common dental treatments and one of the most effective for maintaining good oral health. Despite its name, it is a straightforward and painless procedure that most patients find unremarkable once they have had it done.
What Is a Scale and Polish?
A scale and polish consists of two parts. The scale involves the removal of plaque and tartar (calculus) from the surfaces of your teeth — including below the gumline where your toothbrush cannot reach. The polish smooths the surface of the teeth, making it harder for plaque to re-attach, and can remove some surface staining to leave teeth looking cleaner and brighter.
Do I Need One?
Most patients benefit from a scale and polish, even those with excellent brushing habits. Tartar — hardened plaque — cannot be removed by brushing alone, no matter how diligently you brush. Once it forms, it can only be removed professionally. Left untreated, tartar buildup is a leading cause of gum disease.
Is It Painful?
For most patients, a scale and polish is completely painless. Patients with more significant tartar buildup or gum sensitivity may experience some mild discomfort, particularly around the gumline. If you are concerned, let your hygienist know and they can adjust their approach.
How Often Should I Have One?
The frequency depends on your individual oral health. Most patients benefit from a scale and polish once or twice a year, timed to coincide with their checkup appointments. Your dentist or hygienist will advise you on the most appropriate frequency for your situation.
Is It Available on the NHS?
A scale may be provided on the NHS where there is a clinical need, however this is typically limited to a basic scale as deemed appropriate by your dentist following assessment at your check-up. For the current NHS charge, visit the NHS Inform dental charges page.
