Whether you are looking for a new dentist or trying to understand your options, it helps to know the difference between NHS and private dental care in Scotland.
NHS Dentistry — The Basics
NHS dentistry is funded by the Scottish Government. Patients pay either nothing or a subsidised contribution toward the cost of their treatment. All NHS checkups in Scotland are free. Other treatments are available at 80% of the clinical cost up to a maximum cap. The range of treatments available on the NHS is comprehensive and covers most clinical needs.
Private Dentistry — The Basics
Private dentistry is not funded by the government. Patients pay the full cost of their treatment. Private dentists may offer a wider range of cosmetic and elective treatments, shorter waiting times, and more appointment flexibility. However, the cost is significantly higher.
Key Differences at a Glance
Cost: NHS treatment is subsidised — private is full cost. Checkups: Free on the NHS, charged privately. Treatments: NHS covers clinical needs; private covers clinical and cosmetic. Waiting times: May be longer on the NHS in areas of high demand.
Can I Have Both?
Yes. It is possible to be registered with an NHS dentist and choose to pay privately for specific treatments — such as cosmetic procedures — that are not available on the NHS. Your dentist will always make clear which treatments are NHS and which are private before any work begins.
