What Dental Treatment is Free in Scotland?

Scotland has one of the most accessible NHS dental systems in the UK. Several treatments are free for all patients, and many more are free for those who qualify for an exemption. Here is a complete overview.

Free for Everyone in Scotland

Regardless of your age, income, or employment status, the following are free for all NHS patients in Scotland: dental examinations (checkups) and review examinations. There is no charge for any NHS patient to have their teeth examined by a dentist.

Free for Exempt Patients

Some patients receive all NHS dental treatment free of charge. You qualify for free treatment if you are: under 26 years old; pregnant or have had a baby in the last 12 months; in receipt of Universal Credit, income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance, income-related Employment and Support Allowance, or Income Support; or if you hold a valid HC2 certificate.

Subsidised Treatment for Everyone Else

If you do not qualify for free treatment, you still benefit from NHS subsidies. Patients pay 80% of the treatment cost up to a maximum cap. This applies to fillings, extractions, root canals, crowns, dentures, bridges, and more. For the full NHS charge schedule in Scotland, visit the NHS Inform dental charges page.

What Is Not Available on the NHS?

Some treatments are considered cosmetic and are not available on the NHS. These include teeth whitening, veneers for cosmetic purposes, and dental implants in most cases. Your dentist will always advise you on what is and is not available under the NHS.
